Deploying a web application to a service like Heroku is great. It simplifies life in many ways.
But, what happens when that isn't an option? Is it still possible to have simple “git push” deploys, when you have to run your own server in-house or on a virtual-private-server (VPS)?
The good news is, yes! You can easily set up a “git push” deployment to any server – in house or on a VPS host like Digital Ocean (referral link).
In part 1 of this 2 part episode on deploying to Digital Ocean, you'll see everything you need to get the basic server up and running. You'll create a new server image, use SSH to set up all of the software and basic services that you need, and have everything prepared for the actual media service deployment in the next episode.
So sit back, relax and see what it takes to build your own “git deploy” process using an Ubuntu Linux VPS on Digital Ocean.
